GMC . My 1992 Oldsmobile 88 Won't CrankTrying to figure out why a car will not start can be frustrating and confusing. Fortunately, with just a few steps, you can diagnosed the problem or eliminate the most common factors that might prevent your 1992 Oldsmobile from starting. If you put the key in the ignition and hear nothing, this means that your engine is not even "cranking." While it might sound scary, the fact that there is no sound, is a very specific problem and there are specific troubleshooting steps. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Jumper Cables Clean paper towel Wire brush Work gloves Vehicle owner's manualCheck the Battery Step by Step : 1 Insert your key into the ignition and turn in it over as though you are trying to start the engine. 2 Turn the headlights to the on position. 3 Exit your vehicle and check to see if the lights are on. 4 Check all the connection on the battery. If you can pull either of the wires off the battery, then they are too loose. If you notice corrosion on the batter, take a wire brush and remove it. If the battery posts are dull in color, this may indicated corrosion as well. Once you have brushed the posts off they will appear shiny. Battery acid is corrosive, so avoid it contacting your skin by using gloves. 5 Tighten all the wires and then try your lights again. 6 Try jump starting the battery if your Oldsmobile still does not start. It happens to everyone. Step by Step : 1 Check your gas gauge. 2 Get a certified gas container to fill with gasoline. 3 Fill your tank with at least 3 gallons of gasoline. 4 Pump the gas pedal 3 times before trying to start the engine. Fuses Step by Step : 1 Locate the owner's manual for your vehicle and look up the section on fuses. 2 Find the fuse box and check for breaks in the wires or apparent burn marks. Your owner's manual should indicate which fuses operate the various vehicle components. 3 Replace any damaged fuses. Replacement fuses can be purchased at your local auto repair store. Tips & Warnings If you attempt to jump start the battery and this works for one or two starts and then the problem resumes, this means your alternator is bad. You will need to replace it.
GMC . How to Replace Battery Cables on a 1996 CherokeeIt is not often that the battery cables need to be replaced on a 1996 Cherokee. But in some cases, if not maintained, the corrosion may "creep" down the wiring and damage the wires. Also, if the Jeep goes under water (in a flood, from mudding, etc.), the wires may corrode prematurely. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Set of wrenches Floor jack Jack stands Positive and negative battery cable Wire strippers or knife New battery terminals 4-gauge or 00-gauge eye connectors Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery and lay it aside, using the appropriate wrench. Disconnect the positive cable from the battery. Jack up the front of the Cherokee with the floor jack if you can't fit under it. Support it with floor jacks. 2 Follow the positive cable down to the starter, releasing it from any brackets as you go along. Unbolt the nut on the starter terminal. Remove the battery cable from the starter. 3 Follow the black, negative cable to the ground. It could be grounded to the engine, or the body or frame in the engine compartment. Remove the retaining bolt and remove the cable. If you bought cables with the ends already attached, skip Steps 4 and 5. 4 Strip the ends of the new cables if they did not come with terminals, using the knife or wire strippers. Loosen the bolts on the new terminals, and slide the stripped end of the red cable into one terminal, and the stripped end of the black cable into the other terminal. 5 Strip the other end of each cable. Insert each cable into the eye connector's wire end. Crimp the connectors' ends tightly on the wire. 6 Attach the eyelet end of the new red cable to the starter stud. Replace the nut and tighten firmly. Attach the eyelet end of the new black cable to the ground on the engine, frame or body. Tighten the bolt firmly. 7 Route the wires into their respective brackets or wire looms in the reverse order that you removed them. Attach the positive (red) cable to the positive terminal on the battery. Tighten the terminal. Attach the negative (black) cable to the negative terminal on the battery. Tighten the terminal. Tips & Warnings If the positive battery cable has one or more smaller wires wound in with the cable, you must use new cables purchased from the dealership or an auto part store, instead of making your own. *really very important because it can increase the life of your points. In the package with your new points, there may be a little capsule of cam lubricant. If there isn't any, you can buy a tube of it very cheaply. Then follow these steps: 1. Take a little bit of cam lubricant on your index finger and wipe it around the sides of the cam wheel (see Figure 12-31). Use the lubricant very sparingly. You don't want lumps, just a nice greasy finish on the cam wheel only. If you don't lubricate this wheel, your points could burn out very quickly. If you use too much, the stuff flies around inside the distributor when the wheel spins and fouls things up or causes your points to burn. Because your points open and close very fast (at around 12,000 times a minute when you drive a V-8 engine at 60 mph), you can see why the lubricant is necessary and why it tends to fly around if you're too generous. You want just enough to make your cam wheel lobes slide easily past the points. Figure 12-31: Place only a small amount of 548

Figure 12-32: If a wick is present, lubricate the distributor shaft with just a few drops of oil. Install the neu> points After the distributor is properly lubricated (see the preceding section), you're ready to install your new points. Follow these simple steps: 1. Pick up the new points and gently rub the two contact tips together. Points usually come from the factory with some kind of coating on them, and this coating can keep the spark from going across the gap. Gently rubbing the tips together removes this coating. Don't use cloth, paper, or a file to remove this coating — the lint or tiny filings will foul the points. A little rub is all they heed. 2. Install the new points where the old ones were (see Figures 12-33 and 12-34), but don't tighten down the screws that hold them in place until you have adjusted the gap. GMC . If you get it wrong, your car simply won't start until you get it right. Nothing else will happen, so don't worry.
